I would have rather seen more story development. Perhaps the grandaddy of all horror anthology films (at the time referred to as – portmanteau), “Dead of Night” set the standard for the genre in 1945 with its tale of an architect who feels uneasy as his half-remembered recurring dream turns into reality, while guests at a country house take turns telling supernatural tales. The fourth and final section is "Voices Of Death And Loss". Scribner’s story is not only imaginative, darkly funny, and expertly executed, but it’s also very visual.

The subjects of these books fell into one of two categories; the first being set in a monastery or convent and the second being set in a castle. Shipp creates a horrific ecosystem of surreal prose that the characters have to inhabit. Most people learned of the series with the publication of volume three, which ended up sending people out looking for volumes one and two. If Johnson and Zacchilli’s comics are “hot” in terms of imagery and expressiveness, then Sophia Foster-Dimino’s piece is “cool” in comparison, with stripped-down lines and figures belying the mix of love, lust and self-hatred that the main character feels.

Holy mother of God, I just can’t even with this. There were other notable horror anthologies produced during this time throughout the rest of the world as well, including Italian horror genius Mario Bava’s 1963 film ‘Black Sabbath’ and Masaki Kobayashi’s ‘Kwaidan’ (1963) (likely the only horror anthology that is ever going to get a Criterion release :( ). After all, what better way to learn about a journal than to read it?
