The author, together with Kim Wolhuter, was responsible for the award-winning film Beauty and the Beasts, an outstanding documentary (see it if you can) to which this book is like a companion. I have found the following to be indispensable in Alaska: Birds of Europe by Killian Mullarney, Lars Svensson, Dan Zetterström, and Peter J. Okay, I couldn't resist putting this guy in just to prove a point: wild birds are everywhere! The book covers birds of the Western Ghats - an ecological zone of global importance.

As with most smaller photographic guides, most of the photographs are of male birds. Japan is a fantastic country in which to watch birds and mammals against a backdrop of some spectacular scenery. Some of these books were my constant traveling companions in the long, rewarding and still ongoing learning process of the Ecuadorian avifauna. And this is a guide that makes learning those names feel as natural and intuitive as it should be. There are several good ones such as the Sibley or Peterson guides to Western U. In addition, the authors provide an introduction to each group of birds that addresses the major problems involved in identifying or observing the group: how to separate birds of prey in flight, how to organize a sea watching trip, which duck hybrids can be confused with which main species. Even some birding lodges have rather poor ones on their websites. That was a very special moment for me to see that beautiful bird so close.
